White peat

Lightly decomposed sphagnum peat from the upper peat layer. Holds a lot of water yet still contains sufficient air, and is naturally acidic and low in nutrients, so it can be adjusted precisely to the desired pH and nutrition. Still the benchmark for homogeneity and predictability, but increasingly replaced in part because of the environmental impact of peat extraction.
